INSIGHTS
Understanding the craft behind the canvas.
Acrylic
A technique using pigments suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion — essentially a fast-drying, water-based paint that becomes water-resistant once dry. Unlike encaustic, it needs no heat at all: it's applied wet with brush, palette knife, or other tools directly from the tube or thinned with water, and dries through evaporation rather than fusing. It was developed in the 20th century as a more flexible, quicker-drying alternative to oil paint, and can mimic the properties of watercolor, gouache, or oil depending on how it's thinned or built up.
Encaustic
A technique in which pigments are mixed with hot, liquid wax. After the colors are applied to the surface, a heating element is passed over them until the individual brush or spatula marks fuse into a uniform film. Encaustic dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times (famously used in the Fayum mummy portraits) and requires the wax to stay warm during application.
Oil Painting
Technique in A technique using pigments suspended in a drying oil (traditionally linseed oil, though walnut or poppy oil are also used) as the binder. It dries slowly through oxidation rather than evaporation, which gives artists a long working time to blend colors, rework passages, and build up layers over days or weeks. Oil paint has been the dominant painting medium in Western art since the 15th century, prized for its rich color, smooth blending capability, and range from thin transparent glazes to thick opaque strokes.
Impasto
A technique of applying paint (usually oil or acrylic) so thickly that it stands up from the surface in visible ridges, peaks, or brushstrokes/palette-knife marks, rather than lying flat. The paint retains the texture of the tool used to apply it, and the resulting surface catches real light and shadow, adding a tactile, three-dimensional quality to the work.
